WORD OF ADVICE FROM THE DIRECTOR

***FLORIDA POWER AND LIGHT CUSTOMERS***

If you have received your monthly bill from FPL and KNOW that you will not have the funds available to pay your bill by the due date, DO NOT wait until you receive a turn off notice to address payment on your account. We strongly recommend that you contact FPL either via telephone or register to access your account online and immediately request a payment extension. Your odds of receiving an extension are greater if you utilize the online method. If you are approved for an extension you MUST pay your bill by the extension date; In the interim you will receive notification from FPL that your account was granted a payment extension. Their system may possibly send you a turn off notice regardless of the extension, but if you review the date on the turn off notice, it should indicate your new payment extension date. FPL as with any other creditor cannot assist you if you fail to communicate with them.

If a member of your household has a medical necessity for electric, it is your responsibility to contact FPL and ask for the medical necessity form. This form must be completed by your physician and sent to FPL. This enables FPL to take additional measures to ensure that your electric remains on. This is NOT a method that should be taken for granted and you must pay your electric bill.

You MUST contact LIHEAP at least 2 weeks in advance of your cut off date to schedule an appointment for intake.

DO NOT wait until it is too late and then expect funding agencies to accommodate you because you did not follow through. It is your responsibility to provide the necessary documentation and schedule the required appointments with the agencies that have funding.

If your electric has been turned off because you procrastinated after being provided with the appropriate information; you have no one to blame but yourself.  Agencies cannot help those, who do not want to help themselves.

The Florida Public Service Commission is available to assist and answer consumer questions relating to state utility policies currently in effect. If you have an issue that you cannot resolve with FPL, the Public Service Commission may be able to faciliate an amicable resolution.

The Commission can be reached at 1-800-342-3552.

As always, if you need any assistance or have questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
